Shome's brace of assists fires Cosmos past Fort Wayne

Bangladesh’s Shamit Shome set up two goals as New York Cosmos beat Fort Wayne FC 4-2 on the road, with the midfielder controlling the game from start to finish.

Shome played all 90 minutes, opening the scoring in the 44th, feeding Lamin Jawneh for the first goal after a scoreless opening period.

Ajmeer Spengler added two more before the hour mark, setting up

Sergio Chavez netted one in first-half stoppage time and Sebastian Guenzatti scored shortly after the restart – both assisted by Ajmeer Spengler – as Cosmos took a 3-0 lead.

Fort Wayne responded through Ryan Becher in the 66th minute. Shome answered five minutes later, again picking out Jawneh, who scored his second of the match to make it 4-1.

Fort Wayne added a late consolation, but the result was not in doubt.

This is Shome’s first season with the Cosmos. He joined the American outfit, where legends of the game like Pele and Franz Beckenbauer have played for in the past, from Canada’s Cavalry FC last month.
