Liverpool's Mac Allister 'very sad' not to receive new contract offer

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister said on Tuesday that he had considered leaving the club over the summer after being left disappointed by the lack of a new contract offer, speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

The 27 year old, who still has two years remaining on his current deal, revealed that his representatives had been told Liverpool were not currently in a position to extend his terms, a stark contrast to fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, both of whom signed new contracts earlier this year.

"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad," Mac Allister told reporters at his pre match press conference.

The Argentina international admitted he had entertained genuine interest from elsewhere during the transfer window, including reported links with Wednesday's opponents Atletico Madrid, before ultimately deciding to stay put. "There were options to leave this summer," he said.

Mac Allister explained that his decision to remain came largely down to what he had experienced under new head coach Andoni Iraola during pre season, describing a sense of belief within the group that convinced him to commit for now.

He pointed to the contrast between his own situation and that of his teammates as a source of mixed emotions.

"I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad I didn't get mine," he said.

Despite the disappointment, Mac Allister insisted his effort levels on the pitch had never wavered, regardless of results or personal form across a difficult season for the club overall.

"I think I give 100 percent for this football club every single day in training, games. Of course I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best," he said.

He also sought to reassure supporters that his commitment remained unaffected by the contract uncertainty, framing the situation as unresolved rather than finished.

"Of course, there is still time, the fans don't need to worry because I will give 100 percent until the last day I am here. We will see what happens," he said.

Mac Allister ended by reaffirming his current mindset despite the lack of clarity over his long term future at the club.

"But I think right now I am in the right club and I have the right mindset to give my 100 per cent to the club," he said.

Iraola, for his part, indicated there was no urgency around resolving the contract situation immediately, stressing that his own focus remained on performances rather than off field matters, with the head coach preferring to let footballing form guide such conversations in time.

Mac Allister's underwhelming campaign last season mirrored a broader struggle across Liverpool's squad, as the club endured a disappointing defence of their Premier League title that ultimately led to the departure of former manager Arne Slot.
