Scaloni's Argentina future in doubt as talks stumble: reports

Updated on

Lionel Scaloni's position as Argentina head coach has been thrown into uncertainty, with contract renewal talks running into difficulty just months before his current deal expires, Argentine football journalist Gustavo Yarroch reported.

The report suggests unease is building inside the Albiceleste camp over whether the coaching project under Scaloni will continue beyond the next three months, when his AFA contract runs out.

Scaloni, 48, first took the Argentina job on an interim basis in 2018 after Jorge Sampaoli's exit, before being handed the role permanently — a decision that paved the way for the "Scaloneta" era.

That spell in charge has yielded four trophies: back-to-back Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima, and, most notably, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Neither the AFA nor Scaloni's camp has issued a public statement addressing the reported stalemate, and the exact nature of the sticking points remains unclear.

With the clock running down on his existing deal, speculation is likely to intensify over the coming weeks regarding whether Scaloni extends his stay or Argentina begin looking elsewhere.
