Lamine Yamal becomes Barcelona's youngest captain at 19

Lamine Yamal etched his name into Barcelona's history books on Wednesday, becoming the club's youngest ever captain at just 19 years and 58 days old during their Champions League clash against Feyenoord.

The record breaking armband came about through a chain of substitutions, with Pedri withdrawn in the 63rd minute before Raphinha followed him off the pitch eight minutes later, handing leadership duties to Yamal on his way to the bench.

As one of five members in Barcelona's leadership group alongside teammates including Eric Garcia and Frenkie de Jong, Yamal was next in line to captain the side once both senior options were unavailable on the night.

Garcia was serving a suspension and unable to feature, while De Jong remained sidelined through injury, leaving the young winger as the natural choice to inherit the armband once Raphinha departed the field.

Yamal wasted little time making the occasion memorable, curling home a brilliant free kick from the edge of the box in the 77th minute, sending his effort straight through the defensive wall and beyond the reach of Feyenoord's goalkeeper.

He immediately sprinted towards the bench to celebrate with Raphinha, the very teammate who had passed him the captaincy just six minutes earlier, in a moment that summed up the significance of his night.

The milestone saw Yamal surpass a record previously held by Bojan Krkic, who had captained Barcelona during a Copa del Rey match back in 2010 at the age of 20, a mark that had stood for well over a decade.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Yamal had already reflected on the honour of being included within Barcelona's leadership group earlier in the season.

"It's something to be proud of at 19 years old. I'm very grateful to my teammates. It's a position that comes with responsibilities, even if I'm only 19, but I'm very happy," Yamal said.

Barcelona ultimately ran out comfortable 5-1 winners on the night.
