Jamaat expels MP Gazi Nazrul over 'moral misconduct' after viral video

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has suspended its Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party after an internal probe found evidence of “moral misconduct” following widespread controversy over a video of him involving a woman in an intimate setting.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council on Wednesday.

“A decision has been taken to expel him from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in accordance with Article 62 of the party’s constitution”, the party said in a statement.

The party also decided to immediately notify the Bangladesh Election Commission about the expulsion.

The meeting was chaired by Jamaat chief and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and was held at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition on Minto Road in the capital.

The video sparked widespread discussion and criticism on social media. Shortly after it surfaced, Jamaat said it was examining the matter and would take disciplinary action if the allegations were substantiated.

Nazrul was elected to parliament from the Satkhira-4 constituency in the 12 February general election.
