A dark shadow of dictatorship has been removed, says Opposition Leader on Chuppu’s resignation

Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, said that although President Mohammad Shahabuddin's resignation came late, "the dark shadow of authoritarianism has finally been lifted from the nation's shoulders."

He made the remarks at an emergency press conference organized by Jamaat-e-Islami at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition on Minto Road in the capital on Friday.

"We have no interest in knowing why he resigned. He lost the legitimacy to remain in office long ago," Shafiqur said.

During the briefing, he also congratulated Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Speaker of the National Parliament, on assuming the responsibilities of Acting President.

He urged the Acting President to discharge his duties with neutrality, integrity, and in accordance with the Constitution.

Shafiqur said that one of the key demands of the mass uprising was the removal of Mohammad Shahabuddin from the presidency, alleging that he had "acted as a silent accomplice during the carnage that took place in 2024."

He further alleged that the President had initially stated that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had submitted her resignation letter to him, but later denied making the statement. According to Shafiqur, this amounted to making a lie and constituted a violation of the presidential oath.
