NCP demands immediate arrest of Shahabuddin

Updated on

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded the immediate arrest and trial of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin following his resignation from office on Friday.

NCP Secretary Akhter Hossen, MP, made the demand during a press briefing at the party’s head office in Dhaka on Friday evening.

“He prolonged fascism in Bangladesh and strengthened its roots,” he said.

Akhter alleged the party had sought Shahabuddin’s impeachment, but the ruling BNP refused to take that step.

He dismissed the explanation and reasoning provided by Shahabuddin in his resignation letter, saying they were irrelevant.

“The narrative and justification he mentioned in his resignation letter could create an opportunity for a safe exit. There is no reason to allow him such an exit now”, Akhter said.

Describing Shahabuddin as a “fascist” and an “accomplice of fascist”, Akhter said, “If someone like him is not brought to justice, then justice for those who sacrificed their lives during the mass uprising of 2024 will remain incomplete”.

Referring to the absence of immunity for former presidents, Akhter said, “Until now, legal action against Shahabuddin Chuppu may not have been possible because he was serving as President. However, the moment he resigns from office, he no longer has any legal immunity”.
