Shibir demands full implementation of July Charter, protests JCD attacks

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir on Wednesday held a student gathering demanding the full implementation of the July Charter, prosecution of those responsible for the mass killings, and action against alleged attacks by the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on various campuses.

The procession began at the Central Shaheed Minar at 9:00am, moved through the Dhaka University campus, and ended with a brief rally at the Raju Memorial Sculpture in the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) area.

Hundreds of activists participated in the rally, which was attended by several leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

Nurul Islam Saddam, Central President of Islami Chhatra Shibir, said attacks had taken place at various educational institutions during programmes marking the July Uprising, allegedly targeting elected student representatives, teachers, students, journalists, and pedestrians.

He claimed that many of those involved in the attacks were no longer active students, having completed their academic lives 10 to 15 years ago. He called for maintaining a peaceful campus environment and avoiding what he described as a return to the “fascist” practices of the past.

Addressing the gathering, former Dhaka University Chhatra Shibir President and DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem said students had removed Chhatra League from campuses during the July Revolution of 2024.

He alleged that JCD was attempting to revive a politics of “terror and occupation” on campuses, warning that students would resist if such activities continued.

He called on all stakeholders to work together to build a justice-based Bangladesh in accordance with the aspirations of the July martyrs.

Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Rafiqul Islam Khan MP, Hamidur Rahman Azad, Nurul Islam Bulbul MP, Shafiqul Islam Masu MP, and Shibir General Secretary Sibgatullah Sibgah were also present at the event.
