Ex-MP Akhtaruzzaman placed on 3-day remand in anti-terrorism case

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Awami League leader and former Gazipur-5 MP Akhtaruzzaman on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order at noon after hearing a police petition seeking seven days’ remand for the former lawmaker.

A Detective Branch (DB) team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Akhtaruzzaman on August 5 from Gulshan in the capital.

According to the case statement, several members of the banned Chhatra League, Awami League and its affiliated organisations held an illegal procession on a road adjacent to Mohakhali Bus Terminal on June 18, 2026.

During the procession, the participants allegedly chanted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the ban on the Awami League and detonated cocktails.

The case statement alleges that the accused conspired with, instigated and encouraged party activists to engage in terrorist activities with the intention of harming the state and threatening national solidarity, public security and the sovereignty of Bangladesh.

Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station subsequently filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident.
