MP Gazi Nazrul gets anticipatory bail in attempted murder case

Updated on

The High Court on Monday granted eight weeks’ anticipatory bail to Satkhira-4 MP and expelled Jamaat-e-Islami leader Gazi Nazrul Islam in an attempted murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka.

A HC bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order.

The case was filed on July 21 by Nazrul’s former personal driver Obaidur Rahman, accusing the former lawmaker of ordering an attack on him and attempting to strangle him to death over suspicions that he had leaked private videos.

According to the case statement, Obaidur lived at his sister’s residence at Rozegarden Tower in the Kalshi area of Pallabi. Through this connection, Nazrul allegedly became close to Obaidur’s niece.

After learning about the relationship, Obaidur informed his family and asked Nazrul to refrain from such conduct. Nazrul allegedly became angry and threatened to kill him.

Later, a group allegedly began blackmailing Nazrul using private videos involving him and the woman. He suspected that Obaidur had leaked the videos, according to the case statement.

On July 14, a group of people allegedly attacked Obaidur on Nazrul’s instructions. The case statement says accused Aminur Rahman called Obaidur into a drawing room, where the attackers allegedly beat him with sticks before throwing him to the floor and attempting to strangle him.

The attackers fled after Obaidur’s mother and sister raised an alarm. He was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has permanently expelled Nazrul from the party after finding evidence of what it described as unethical activities, in accordance with its constitution.

The party has also decided to formally notify the Election Commission of the cancellation of his membership.
