BNP adds four leaders to standing committee

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has inducted four leaders into its National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body.

According to a press release issued by the party on Saturday, the new members are Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Aman Ullah Aman, Dr Farhad Halim Donar and Md Ismail Jabiullah.

The BNP said the appointments were made to strengthen the party’s organisational activities and bring experienced leaders into its top policymaking forum.

The party expressed hope that the four leaders would use their experience and judgement to provide considered advice and play an effective role in making important decisions in the interests of the party and the people.

The appointments come two days after the BNP nominated its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its candidate for the country’s presidency.

Fakhrul has served as the party’s secretary general through years of political struggle, including periods when party chairperson Khaleda Zia was in jail and acting chairman Tarique Rahman was living in exile in London.

With Fakhrul now the party’s presidential nominee, he resigned from his positions in the party and government.

Saturday’s expansion of the standing committee adds four senior figures to the forum that plays a central role in shaping the BNP’s political decisions.
