Mayoral elections: Jamaat picks Selim Uddin for Dhaka North, Shadik Kayem for South

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has selected its candidates for the upcoming mayoral elections in Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations, with the party’s secretary general confirming the names informally.

Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar disclosed the names while speaking to journalists after an event in the capital on Monday.

“We are an election-oriented party and have made organisational preparations for the local government elections,” Parwar said, adding that the party is in the final stages of selecting candidates for union parishads, upazilas, municipalities and city corporations across the country.

He said Jamaat would contest the elections in both Dhaka city corporations and had already selected candidates internally. The party will make formal announcements at an appropriate time, he added.

Jamaat has selected Mohammad Selim Uddin, ameer of its Dhaka North unit, to contest the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral race. Selim is also a member of the party’s Central Executive Council and a former central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat’s student wing.

For Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the party has selected Md Abu Shadik Kayem, vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).

Shadik played a prominent role during the 2024 student-led mass uprising and was elected DUCSU vice-president in the September 2025 elections. He previously served as president of Shibir’s Dhaka University unit and later as the organisation’s central International Affairs Secretary.

Jamaat’s announcement comes a day after the National Citizen Party (NCP) named its mayoral candidates for the two Dhaka city corporations. Nasiruddin Pathwary will contest the Dhaka South race, while Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan will run for Dhaka North.
