NCP condemns ‘distortion of Patwary’s remarks’, accuses government of failing to curb banned AL’s sabotage

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, MP, and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, MP, have strongly condemned what they described as the BNP’s partial presentation of remarks by NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwary, accusing the party of using the statement for political propaganda.

They also accused the ruling party of attempting to shift blame onto political opponents amid its failure to curb sabotage allegedly carried out by the banned Awami League.

In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday, the NCP leaders said Patwary’s actual remarks were: “If we want to eliminate the Awami League from Bangladesh, reforms, implementation of the referendum verdict and the trial of the July massacre are needed. If these three demands are met, there will be no more cocktail explosions in Dhaka city.”

The leaders alleged that the BNP and its political activists were deliberately presenting the remarks in a trimmed and distorted manner to conceal their own failures and gain political advantage.

They said Patwary’s original statement was a clear proposal for the permanent elimination of fascism and the restoration of law and order and peace in the country.

The NCP leaders further alleged that the government and law enforcement agencies had “utterly failed” to curb arson attacks, cocktail explosions and other acts of sabotage allegedly being carried out across the country by Awami League cadres.

They said the move to blame the NCP and other opposition parties was an “evasive tactic” aimed at concealing the government’s failures and the deterioration of the law-and-order situation, as well as diverting attention from the anti-fascist protests.

The NCP said its street protests would continue until its demands for the trial of the July massacre, reforms and implementation of the referendum verdict were fulfilled.

“No amount of deliberate political propaganda or distortion of statements can suppress the aspirations of the mass uprising,” the party said.
