40 injured in clash between Chhatra Dal, Shibir over fresher reception in Sunamganj

At least 40 people were injured in a clash between Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir over a fresher reception programme at Gobindaganj Abdul Haque Smrity College in Sunamganj’s Chhatak on Thursday.

The clash began around noon at Gobindaganj Point on the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway after tensions erupted over a reception programme organised by the college unit of Chhatra Shibir for newly admitted Class XI students.

According to local residents and police, the two groups engaged in several rounds of chasing and counter-chasing for nearly three hours. The clashes left at least 40 people injured from both sides and brought traffic on the highway to a standstill.

Junaid Ahmed, president of the college Shibir unit, alleged that Chhatra Dal activists launched an unprovoked attack on their programme.

He said several Shibir activists were injured, including eight who sustained serious injuries. Shibir members later resisted the attack with the support of general students, he claimed.

Ubaidul Islam, general secretary of Sunamganj district Chhatra Dal, said Shibir activists had become involved in a confrontation with Chhatra Dal.

“We are looking into why the incident happened. We will sit and decide what should be done next,” he said.

He also warned that Chhatra Dal would not accept any attempt by Shibir to “create disorder” on campuses in Sunamganj.

Jhalak Mahanta, inspector of Chhatak Police Station, said police went to the spot after receiving information about the clash and brought the situation under control.

“The situation is currently calm. We have received reports of some vandalism and are looking into the matter. Legal action will be taken based on the complaints,” he said.
