Jamaat strips former Cumilla Ameer, Nayeb-e-Ameer of party membership

Updated on:

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has cancelled the party membership (rukniyat) of two former leaders of its Cumilla city unit following an investigation into clashes and vandalism at the party office, including an attack on the city secretary's car.

The two leaders are Kazi Deen Mohammad, former Ameer of the Cumilla city unit, and AKM Emdadul Haque Mamun, its former Nayeb-e-Ameer. Both held the status of Rukon, an enlisted member of the party's central organisation.

Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar confirmed the decision to Daily Waadaa on Sunday evening.

"Allegations against them were found in the preliminary investigation. That is why the membership of both has been cancelled," he said.

He added that the investigation was still ongoing and that the party could take further disciplinary action if the allegations were established.

The action follows an incident on 14 October at the party's Cumilla city office at Faruqi House in Moghultuli, where a meeting was underway. Clashes, cocktail explosions and vandalism broke out over the formation of a committee. The private car of city unit Secretary Mahbubur Rahman was also vandalised during the incident.

Following the incident, the party formed an investigation committee to look into the matter.

On 26 October, Jamaat's central executive council held a meeting chaired by party Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman. After reviewing the investigation committee's recommendations and discussing the matter, the council decided to cancel the membership of the two leaders.
