AB Party chairman says govt failure deepening economic crisis
Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju on Monday said the government's failures and mismanagement have made the country's economic crisis more acute.
Speaking as chair of a special meeting of the party's central secretariat committee at its central office, Monju said the government had failed to rein in rising commodity prices, taken no effective steps to tackle the power and energy crisis, and presided over a steady deterioration in law and order.
Taken together, he said, these failures have pushed the country toward serious uncertainty.
He said there has been no visible improvement in the banking sector or the stock market. Fresh trouble also looms over the garment industry and the migrant labour export sector, he said, which would have a negative impact on the wider economy.
A movement that has begun in the garment sector over a pay structure could gradually spread to workers in other professions, he warned.
Monju also criticised the government for lacking sincerity in running the country by taking everyone along. At the same time, he said, the opposition is failing to play the effective role expected of it because of a lack of experience.
He argued that national unity between the government and opposition is needed to revive the economy and prevent what he called a resurgence of "Awami fascism."
It is equally important, he said, to ensure an environment in which the opposition can play an effective and responsible role in parliament and in the political arena.
Joint Secretary Barrister Zobayer Ahmed Bhuiyan and others, along with the party's organising secretaries, committee convenors and heads of affiliated bodies, attended the meeting.
