Woman claiming to be Rony’s wife set to join NCP, former MP denies marriage
A woman claiming to be the wife of former lawmaker Golam Maula Rony is set to join the National Citizen Party's (NCP) women's wing, Nari Shakti, triggering a public dispute after Rony denied being married to her.
Farzana Afroz, a former vice-chairman of Satkania upazila in Chattogram, is being considered for a senior position in Nari Shakti, several NCP leaders confirmed to Daily Waadaa.
Discussions are underway to appoint her either joint convener or joint member secretary of the organisation's full committee.
Nari Shakti is currently led by NCP leader and reserved-seat lawmaker Dr Mahmuda Mitu as convener, while another NCP lawmaker, Nusrat Tabassum, serves as member secretary.
Speaking to Waadaa, Farzana insisted that Rony was her legally married husband.
“My husband is a good person. Perhaps because he is under pressure for various reasons, and out of embarrassment, he does not want to acknowledge our marriage,” she said.
Rony, however, categorically rejected her claim.
At around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, the former lawmaker posted Farzana's photograph on Facebook with a brief statement: “This woman is not my wife.”
About 20 minutes later, he issued a second, sharper post, directly addressing NCP leaders Nahid and Hasnat.
“Stop this filth. Is this how you do politics? Have you become so politically bankrupt that you have to make someone who claims to be my wife a leader to pursue your politics?” Rony wrote.
The dispute has emerged as NCP leaders discuss Farzana's possible appointment to Nari Shakti's leadership.
Neither Farzana's claim of marriage nor Rony's denial has been independently substantiated. The NCP leaders cited by Waadaa confirmed discussions over her appointment but did not establish her marital status.
