Bangladesh's Asian Games hockey bid begins in defeat to South Korea

Bangladesh's men's hockey team endured a difficult start to their Asian Games campaign, losing 5-0 to South Korea in their opening Pool A fixture at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan on Friday.

Roman Sarker's side managed to keep South Korea at bay for the opening 20 minutes, holding firm through a goalless first quarter before their resistance eventually gave way as the match progressed further.

South Korea took control early in the second quarter, scoring twice within seconds of each other around the 21st minute, with Bae Song-min opening the scoring through a field goal before Oh Seong doubled the advantage almost immediately afterwards.

Bangladesh went into the interval trailing 2-0, and the situation worsened further in the third quarter when Lee Gangsan added a third field goal in the 30th minute to extend South Korea's growing lead.

Yang Ji-hoon then converted a penalty corner just two minutes later, pushing the score to 4-0 and effectively ending any realistic hope of a Bangladesh fightback heading into the closing stages of the contest.

Bangladesh pushed forward in search of a consolation during the final quarter, but could not find a way past a well organised South Korean defence throughout the closing exchanges of the match.

Instead, Shim Jae-won added further gloss to the scoreline with a field goal in the 58th minute, sealing a comprehensive 5-0 win for a South Korean side chasing their fifth Asian Games hockey gold medal.

Four of South Korea's five goals on the day came through open play, with only Yang Ji-hoon's strike arriving via a set piece, underlining the fluency of their attacking play throughout the contest.

Bangladesh struggled to create meaningful opportunities of their own, managing only a couple of half chances across the full sixty minutes while also finishing well behind in overall possession, retaining the ball just 35 per cent of the time.

Two penalty corners came Bangladesh's way during the match, though neither was converted, further highlighting the gulf in quality between the two sides on display at the Gifu venue.

The result extends Bangladesh's winless record against South Korea to six consecutive meetings, continuing a lopsided head to head history between the two nations in international hockey competition.

Bangladesh, who finished sixth at the equivalent event back in 2018, will next face hosts Japan in their second Pool A fixture on Tuesday, looking to bounce back quickly from Friday's heavy opening defeat.

Pool A also features India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia alongside Bangladesh, Japan and South Korea, while Pool B consists of Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Oman, Uzbekistan and Thailand in this year's twelve team tournament.

Four teams from each pool will progress to the quarter final stage, with the four remaining sides then advancing through to the semi finals before the tournament concludes with its medal deciding matches.

This year's competition carries extra significance beyond the usual medal race, with qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics also directly tied to results achieved at this Asian Games tournament in Japan.

Whichever nation claims the gold medal will earn automatic qualification for the main Olympic tournament in 2028, securing their place at the Games without needing to compete in any further qualifying events.

Even for those falling short of the title, opportunities will remain, with the next six best performing sides, finishing between second and seventh overall, progressing into the 2028 FIH Olympic Qualification Tournament as a final route to Los Angeles.
