Bangladesh secure first hockey win at Asian Games with rout of Sri lanka

Bangladesh's men's hockey team recorded their first victory of the Asian Games, beating Sri Lanka 5-1 in a one sided contest played in Gifu on Tuesday, September 22, easing concerns that had built ahead of the fixture.

The result marked a welcome return to form against a side Bangladesh had traditionally dominated, particularly after suffering an unexpected defeat to Sri Lanka in the AHF Cup earlier this year, a result that had left the team wary heading into this rematch.

Bangladesh took control from early on, with Amirul Islam opening the scoring in the first quarter before the side added a second goal in the following period to establish a firm grip on proceedings under Roman Sarker's leadership.

Amirul and Ashraful Islam each finished the match with a brace, while Mahbub Hossain contributed the remaining goal, rounding out a comprehensive attacking display that left Sri Lanka struggling to contain Bangladesh throughout.

Bangladesh's dominance was reflected clearly in the penalty corner count, with the side earning more than 15 across the match, a tally that kept Sri Lanka's defenders under constant pressure and highlighted the gulf between the two sides on the day.

Sri Lanka's Kushal did manage to pull one goal back during the match, offering a brief moment of resistance, though it never threatened to change the eventual outcome as Bangladesh cruised to victory.

The win should provide a significant confidence boost heading into Bangladesh's remaining group stage fixtures, with two matches still to play.

They face Indonesia on Saturday, September 26, before a considerably tougher test against India in their final group match on September 28.
