Fatema finishes third in Asian Games surfing heat

Bangladesh surfer Fatema Akter finished third in her opening heat of the women's shortboard surfing event at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with an interference penalty proving costly in a competition where she remains in contention through the eliminator round.

Competing in Heat 2 of Round 1 at Long Beach, Fatema recorded a final score of 2.92 points from her best two waves.

She earned 2.50 points on her stronger wave but was penalised on her second scoring wave, where an original score of 0.83 was reduced to 0.42 under the interference penalty rules, effectively costing her a higher finish.

China's Jin Shuhan dominated the heat, taking first place with a combined score of 7.73 points from waves worth 4.00 and 3.73. Indonesia's Hair Kia Jo finished second on 5.03 points, with scores of 2.73 and 2.30.

A total of 21 surfers are competing across eight first-round heats in the women's event.

Heat winners advance directly to Round 3, the last 16, while those who finish outside the top positions enter Round 2, the eliminator round, from where they can still fight through to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and ultimately the medal contest.

Fatema, who hails from Cox's Bazar, retains a path to the medals through the eliminator round despite the third-place finish.
