Bangladesh thrash Nepal 33-20 in Begum Khaleda Zia IHF Nations Trophy handball opener
Bangladesh began the Begum Khaleda Zia IHF Nations Trophy with a commanding 33-20 win over Nepal in women’s handball on Sunday, at the Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in Paltan. Ana Alonso’s side led throughout and won by 13 goals.
Nepal tried to stay level in the opening half but struggled against Bangladesh’s tactical attacks and resilience. The hosts pressed from the start and went into the interval with a 13-9 lead, leaving the visitors with plenty to do after the break.
Bangladesh raised their attacking intensity after the restart and stretched the gap steadily, while Nepal, unable to match the pace, were left chasing a game that had slipped away. The home side finished with 33 goals, a convincing opening statement.
Alpana Akter was the star, scoring seven goals to earn the Player of the Match award. Mishti Khatun and Shyamoli Ming were also lethal in attack, scoring six each, while captain Ismetara Nishi added five goals and Saima Jannat Sima four.
Masuda Akter chipped in with two goals, and Purnima Rani, Anuradha Pahan and Tasnia Rahman Arsha scored one each, meaning nine players found the net for the hosts. The spread of scorers showed the depth Alonso has at her disposal.
The four-nation tournament opened with a colourful cultural programme. Supported by the International Handball Federation and organised by the Bangladesh Handball Federation, it was inaugurated by State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, who called hosting it a matter of great pride.
The minister said the event would strengthen regional goodwill and brotherhood among the participating nations, adding: “Alongside energising the youth, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is working tirelessly to increase women’s participation in sports.”
He urged all teams to showcase their best while upholding the true ideals of sport.
Bangladesh, after a confident start, now face a tougher test against a formidable India on Monday, October 19, in their second match of the competition.
