Facebook, Instagram web versions hit by global outage; thousands report login issues

Updated on

Meta’s Facebook and Instagram's web versions experienced a widespread outage on Sunday afternoon, with thousands of users worldwide reporting login and access problems, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.

Downdetector, which tracks online service disruptions based on user-submitted reports, recorded a sharp spike in outage reports, with nearly 5,000 users reporting problems accessing Facebook at around 1:54pm. By 2:08pm, more than 2,000 users had reported issues with Instagram.

Many users took to social media to report the disruption. Some said they were greeted with the message: "Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again."

Others encountered the error: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can," when attempting to access the platforms.

Some users also reported being abruptly locked out of their accounts while logged in through a web browser.

Despite the disruption affecting the Facebook and Instagram web versions, Meta's Messenger and WhatsApp applications appeared to be functioning normally.
