Trump reiterates his positive portrayal of Iran talks

President Donald Trump said talks with Tehran seemed "to be working out quite well," reiterating ​his positive portrayal of the negotiations on the Iran war without elaborating ‌on the specifics of the discussions.

Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing well despite the war entering its sixth month and no permanent end to the conflict yet. In an interview on FOX5 Las Vegas with journalist Tom Durian, published Wednesday evening, Trump said, "I hear they are doing very well."

He added that the two sides were negotiating and that "it seems to be working out quite well." Trump has also repeatedly claimed that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route that Iran closed after the war began, is close.

During the interview, Trump said he was "not looking to kill people and totally obliterate everything," arguing that negotiations had helped avoid further escalation.

However, human rights experts have condemned his previous threats to target civilian infrastructure, while Iran has warned it would retaliate by striking critical regional infrastructure if the United States carried out such attacks.

The 1949 Geneva Conventions prohibit attacks on infrastructure essential for civilians, and U.S.-based international law experts said in April that such actions could amount to war crimes.

The conflict began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases. Since then, U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
