Modi, Pezeshkian discuss need for safety of seafarers, freedom of navigation

In a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, and the safety and well-being of seafarers.

The discussion, which centred on developments in West Asia, was held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Friday, The Hindu reported.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Modi reiterated India’s position that disputes and tensions in the region should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.

He also stressed the importance of continued efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in West Asia, while ensuring freedom of navigation and commerce and the safety and well-being of seafarers.

The two leaders also reviewed various aspects of India-Iran bilateral relations.

Modi thanked Iran for its regular and high-level participation in BRICS-related meetings despite the challenging circumstances. He said the grouping could help foster resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability among countries of the Global South.

The Indian prime minister also thanked Pezeshkian for taking part in the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.
