Trump meets New York City Mayor Mamdani

US President Donald Trump will meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, in their third face-to-face meeting since Mamdani was elected mayor, the mayor’s office announced Sunday.

The meeting will take place at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the New York mayor, as Trump visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The mayor’s office said the discussion would focus on “issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers”, but did not provide further details about the agenda.

The meeting marks the first time Trump and Mamdani will meet in New York City. Their previous two meetings took place at the White House, with the first coming in November 2025, shortly after Mamdani won the mayoral election, and the second in February this year.

Their first meeting followed months of public clashes during the mayoral campaign. Despite their political differences, Trump and Mamdani struck a notably cordial tone during the Oval Office meeting, exchanging smiles and saying they would work together on issues affecting New York.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, had campaigned on an agenda focused on affordability and housing, while Trump had publicly criticised him during the election campaign. Since taking office, however, the two have maintained communication and held discussions on issues including housing development.

During their February meeting, Mamdani described the discussion as productive and said he looked forward to building more housing in New York. The two also discussed the detention of a Columbia University student by federal immigration authorities. The student was later released.

The relationship has not been without disagreements. Mamdani and New York Attorney General Letitia James have sued the Trump administration over a federal policy concerning immigrants who use public benefits, according to recent reporting. The mayor has also continued to differ with the administration on immigration and other federal policies affecting the city.

Monday’s meeting comes as Trump begins a series of engagements in New York linked to the UN General Assembly. The president is scheduled to address the UN General Debate on Tuesday and is also due to hold meetings with several foreign leaders during his visit.

The mayor’s office has not disclosed whether the Gracie Mansion meeting will be open to the press or whether a joint statement will be issued afterwards.
