West Bengal moves to scrap Madrasah Service Commission, merge it with School Service Commission

Updated on:

The West Bengal government has begun the process of abolishing the state’s Madrasah Service Commission and merging it with the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC), paving the way for madrasa teacher recruitment through the school service body, a senior official said on Thursday.

The proposal was approved at a recent state cabinet meeting, but amendments to existing laws will be required before the merger can take effect, the official said.

Education Principal Secretary Binod Kumar told PTI that the process would be completed within this year.

“Yes, something regarding this (merger) will be done by this year,” he said.

The School Education Department is expected to introduce two separate bills in the state assembly—one to repeal the West Bengal Madrasah Service Commission Act and another to amend the WBSSC Act.

Once passed by the assembly, the bills will be sent to the governor for assent, followed by the publication of a gazette notification.

At a programme on Tuesday evening, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also announced that the state government would abolish the Madrasah Service Commission and merge it with the WBSSC, according to The New Indian Express.

The proposed merger would bring the recruitment of teachers for recognised madrasas under the WBSSC framework, Kumar said.

Officials said the move is part of the state government’s efforts to streamline teacher recruitment and introduce greater uniformity in the process.
