The European Union (EU) announced an additional 14 million euro in support for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, a statement from the EU and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Thursday.

The support will provide life‑saving assistance and strengthen protection for the 1.2 million Rohingya refugees and 70,000 members of the host community in Cox’s Bazar. 

“This is about preserving dignity, strengthening resilience and giving refugees the tools to rebuild their lives”, Michael Miller, Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation in Bangladesh, said in the statement.

The announcement comes ahead of World Refugee Day, observed on June 20, which recognises the resilience and strength of people forced to flee conflict and persecution while acknowledging the support provided by host communities worldwide.

Previously the UNHCR and its partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP), UN Women, and Bangladesh Government,  appealed for $710.5 million in 2026 as the organisations called for renewed international support in its updated joint response plan to support the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in the sprawling camps of Cox’s Bazar, most of whom arrived in 2017 fleeing a brutal crackdown on the Muslim ethnic group by the Myanmar military forces.

The ongoing conflict between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army, another ethnic armed group fighting for sovereignty in the country’s Rakhine state, led to the fresh influx of 1,50,000 more Rohingya refugees in the last two years.
