The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a blanket ban on carrying weapons and weapon-like objects, as well as using fireworks and firecrackers, during Ashura processions in the capital on June 26, citing public safety concerns.
In a public notice issued on Sunday, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed prohibited participants from carrying cleavers, daggers, swords, spears, lances, sticks and other similar items throughout the duration of the processions under Sections 28 and 29 of the DMP Ordinance.
The order also bans the use of fireworks and firecrackers, a practice often seen during Muharram observances.
Police said the restrictions were imposed after weapons displayed in previous years' Tazia processions created security risks, triggered panic among bystanders and led to several untoward incidents.
Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The day is marked by mourning processions by Shia Muslims across the world.
The DMP said the display of weapons and the use of fireworks are inconsistent with the solemn nature of the religious observance and urged participants to cooperate in ensuring a peaceful and orderly commemoration.
