Ex-MP Afzal shown arrested in Bangabazar arson, vandalism case

A Dhaka court on Monday showed former Kishoreganj-5 lawmaker Md Afzal Hossain arrested in a case filed with Shahbagh Police Station over allegations of arson, vandalism and damage to property at the capital's Bangabazar Market.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order after police produced Afzal before the court and sought permission to show him arrested in the case. The court later sent him back to jail.

According to the case statement, a fire that broke out at Bangabazar Market on 4 April 2023 caused losses estimated at around Tk500 crore. Following the incident, trader Mohammad Kamal Hossain Ripon filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station.
