Former chief justice Khairul Haque shown arrested in attempted murder case

Staff Correspondent

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered that former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque be shown arrested in an attempted murder and Explosives Act case filed at Banani Police Station in connection with the July Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman granted the investigating officer's application to show Khairul arrested in the case.

Khairul Haque's lawyer, Motahar Hossain Saju, said the latest order would prevent Khairul from being released from prison despite having secured bail in eight other cases.

He added that a High Court directive prohibits Khairul from being shown arrested in any new case.

The investigating officer, Sub Inspector Saiful Islam of Banani Police Station, filed the application to show him arrested in this case on July 2.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah initially fixed July 6 for the hearing in the presence of the accused. However, as the original case records were with the Sessions Court that day, the hearing was deferred to July 8.

Khairul Haque was not brought to court from prison on Wednesday. Instead, the hearing on the application was conducted through virtual appearance.

According to the case details, Khairul Haque had previously obtained bail in eight cases, including the case filed over the death of Khobaib during the July Uprising in Jatrabari area of the capital.

In another case, Supreme Court lawyer Mujahidul Islam Shaheen filed a complaint against Khairul Haque at Shahbagh Police Station on August 27 last year, alleging corruption and judgment forgery.

Earlier, on August 25, former Narayanganj District Bar Association president and Fatullah BNP general secretary Abdul Bari Bhuiyan filed a murder case against him at Fatullah Police Station.

The ACC is also investigating allegations that he unlawfully obtained a residential plot.

Khairul Haque was arrested by police from his Dhanmondi residence on 24 July last year and has remained in custody in connection with various cases since then.

He was appointed as Bangladesh's 19th chief justice on September 27, 2010, with his appointment taking effect on September 30 that year. He retired on May 17, 2011 and later served three terms as chairman of the Law Commission.
