Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Wednesday acknowledged gaps in a documentary screened at a state-organised July Uprising programme, but expressed disappointment over the disorder that unfolded during the national event, saying it undermined the spirit of national unity.

Speaking as the chief guest at a reception and discussion for families of July martyrs and July fighters at the China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka, Hafiz said he felt "deeply saddened, ashamed and hurt" by the scenes that unfolded at the programme.

"The state organised this programme to pay tribute to the July fighters. But what I witnessed here has made me deeply saddened, ashamed and hurt," he said.

Referring to disruptions during the event, Hafiz said he had seen a picture of national unity earlier in the day during the inauguration of the July Museum, but encountered an entirely different atmosphere at the afternoon programme.

He admitted that the documentary contained mistakes, saying such errors can happen.

"There were certainly mistakes in the documentary. It did not include any image of Abu Sayed. Can there be a documentary on July without Abu Sayed? There was also no mention of Begum Khaleda Zia," he said.

However, he noted that the minister concerned had repeatedly acknowledged the mistakes from the stage, while NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen had also appealed to the audience to remain calm.

Lamenting the absence of unity at the national programme, the acting president said the commotion had prompted foreign guests to leave the venue.

"I found no sign of national unity at this national event," he said.

Earlier in the programme, leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) walked out after accusing the documentary of distorting the history of the July Uprising by omitting the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and its nine-point and one-point demands.

Tensions escalated after the screening, with some injured July fighters and family members of martyrs chanting "Fake, fake" in protest.
