Despite the latest increase that raised the price of diesel to 135 taka per litre, Bangladesh's diesel price remains lower than that of many regional and Asian countries, according to Global Petrol Prices.
Based on an exchange rate of 123.65 taka per US dollar, Bangladesh's diesel price is equivalent to $1.092 per litre, the data showed.
The government raised the domestic diesel price by 20 taka per litre in the latest adjustment, which came into effect on September 21. Despite the increase, diesel remains cheaper in Bangladesh than in several Asian countries.
Among Asian countries, diesel is priced at 185.48 taka per litre in Pakistan, 177.81 taka in Indonesia, 173.23 taka in South Korea, 168.53 taka in the Philippines, 164.83 taka in Myanmar, 161.24 taka in Nepal and 146.77 taka in China.
In Vietnam, diesel costs 137 taka per litre, just 2 taka more than the price in Bangladesh.
The gap is significantly wider compared with several developed economies. Diesel costs 580.54 taka per litre in Hong Kong, 347.83 taka in Germany, 329.40 taka in France, 317.78 taka in the United Kingdom and 291.32 taka in Sweden.
In Canada, diesel is priced at 222.69 taka per litre, while the price in the United States is 205.26 taka. These are 87.69 taka and 70.26 taka higher than Bangladesh's price respectively.
Bangladesh's prices for other petroleum products also remain below international average retail prices, according to Global Petrol Prices.
The new octane price of 165 taka per litre is around 15% below the international average retail price for Octane-95 gasoline. The international average stood at $1.57 per litre on September 14, equivalent to approximately 194.12 taka at the exchange rate of 123.65 taka per dollar.
Bangladesh's petrol price of 160 taka per litre is about 34.12 taka, or 17.6%, below the same international benchmark.
The new kerosene price of 155 taka per litre is also below the international average. Global Petrol Prices put the average retail price of kerosene at $1.34 per litre on September 14, equivalent to approximately 165.69 taka.
Bangladesh's kerosene price is therefore about 10.69 taka, or 6.5%, below the international average.
The government revised domestic fuel prices following changes in international fuel prices and other market factors. The new prices came into effect on September 21.
