Family of four from Jashore, including two children, feared dead in Cox’s Bazar resort fire

Staff Correspondent

Four members of a family from Jashore, including two young children, remain unaccounted for after a devastating fire killed at least 10 people at a resort in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.

Their relatives fear they may be among the victims whose bodies were burned beyond recognition.

The missing are Nahidur Rahman, 41, his wife Afsana Matin Tanji, 36, and their daughters Ruzaina Inaya, seven, and Sunaina Ihana, three.

The family had checked into Tuptup Eco Resort in the Patuar Tek area of Inani, along the Marine Drive road in Ukhiya upazila.

A booking receipt shared with Daily Waadaa confirms that Nahidur reserved a room from October 16 to 18. The reservation was made on October 11, with checkout scheduled for 1pm on Sunday.

But on Saturday morning, a fire tore through the resort.

Ten bodies were recovered. Six victims were reported to belong to the same family.

By midnight Saturday, Nahidur, his wife and their children remained unreachable.

His elder brother, Zahidur Rahman Prince, said Nahidur had informed him of his plans to travel to Cox’s Bazar on Friday.

When news of the fire emerged, Zahidur repeatedly called his brother. None of the family members answered.

He left for Cox’s Bazar on Saturday evening to search for them.

Zahidur, who lives in Monirampur municipality in Jashore, also shared the resort booking receipt with this correspondent through WhatsApp.

Nahidur, originally from Mohonpur village in Monirampur, worked at Grand Power Limited in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area. He lived with his wife and children in Shewrapara, Mirpur.

A former student of the second batch of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, he studied Criminology and Police Science.

His relatives and colleagues have been contacting hospitals and authorities, hoping to establish the family's whereabouts.

Police, however, have yet to confirm their fate.

Cox’s Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Ahidur Rahman told Daily Waadaa that authorities had received information about Nahidur being missing.

But he could not confirm whether Nahidur’s wife and children were among the victims.

According to Ahidur, six of the 10 victims had been identified, while the identities of four others remained unconfirmed.

DNA samples were being collected to establish their identities.

Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Firoz Kabir of the District Special Branch said DNA identification procedures were under way.

The fire broke out at around 7:30am on Saturday and was brought under control at approximately 10:30am, according to police and fire service officials.

Firefighters recovered 10 bodies from the charred resort.

The severity of the burns has complicated identification, leaving families waiting for forensic confirmation.
