Bangladesh suffer an innings defeat to Zimbabwe for first time in 25 years

After a quarter of a century, Bangladesh suffered an innings defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe, losing the one-off Test by an innings and 85 runs inside three days in Harare on Tuesday.

The Tigers last suffered this ignominy against Zimbabweans back in April 2004 in Bulawayo in both teams’ first meeting in the format.

This is also Zimbabwe's biggest ever win in Tests by an innings margin. The biggest win earlier was an innings and 73-run win over Afghanistan last year.

The writing was already on the wall for Bangladesh after the second day, when Bangladesh reached 40-1 in their second innings at stumps, still trailing by another 270 runs.

After getting bundled out for a mere 140 in the first innings, the visiting batters had an opportunity to put up some resistance and force Zimbabwe to come out to bat in their second innings.

But Bangladesh’s batting once again fell apart against the Zimbabwean pace attack. Blessing Muzarabani picked up four wickets while Richard Ngarava claimed three as Bangladesh were bundled out for a mere 185 inside the second session.

The veteran Mushfiqur Rahim and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto were the only batters to get into 30s, making 34 and 30 respectively.

Zimbabwe, in their only innings with the bat, piled on 410 thanks to a brilliant 140 from in-form opener Innocent Kaia and half-centuries from Wessly Madhevere (77 not out), Craig Ervine (60) and Brian Bennet (59).

Both teams will next play a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series.

The white-ball portion of the tour will begin on July 6 in Harare.
