Tanzid Hasan Tamim wrote himself into Bangladesh's cricketing history on the second day in Darwin, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century on Australian soil, in only the second Test appearance of his career.
The left-handed opener reached three figures in the 64th over, stepping out to drive Nathan Lyon towards long-off before punching the air, removing his helmet and kissing the Bangladesh crest.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was first to embrace him as the Darwin crowd rose in applause.
Resuming the day on 96 for 1 alongside Mominul Haque, Tanzid showed patience through the morning session as Australia searched for a breakthrough. Mominul fell for 49 off 95 balls, with eight fours, edging Josh Hazlewood behind after the pair had added 102 for the second wicket.
Tanzid continued on, reaching his maiden Test fifty from 102 balls before going on to complete his century off 188, having survived two reprieves along the way.
He eventually departed for 101 off 197 balls, holing out to Mitchell Starc off Lyon while attempting to clear long-off, an innings that included eight fours and a six.
By then he had added 92 for the third wicket with Shanto, who remained unbeaten on 50 as Bangladesh moved to 230 for 2, a lead of 32 runs, having bowled Australia out for 198 in the first innings on the back of Hasan Mahmud's career-best six for 55.
The innings eclipsed Hannan Sarkar's 76 at Cairns in 2003, previously the highest individual Test score by a Bangladeshi batter in Australia, and came against an attack featuring Pat Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon.
It also puts Tanzid, at 25 years and 256 days old, in a select group of visiting batters to have scored Test centuries in Australia against that pace trio, a list that includes Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, Ajinkya Rahane, Yashasvi Jaiswal, David Malan, Jonny Bairstow and Yasir Shah.
Tanzid becomes the 17th Bangladeshi to score a Test century away from home, but the first to do so in Australia specifically.
Mushfiqur Rahim leads Bangladesh's overseas century list with six, followed by Tamim Iqbal and Shanto with four each, while Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful and Mahmudullah have three apiece.
Bangladesh have had only one previous Test centurion against Australia in any conditions. Shahriar Nafees scored 138 in Fatullah in 2006, a mark that remains the country's highest individual score against Australia and stood alone for two decades before Tanzid's innings in Darwin.
In first-class cricket, Tanzid has five centuries and six half-centuries from 26 matches, having made just 26 in his only previous Test innings before this one.
