Australia captain Pat Cummins has thrown his support behind a group of former international cricket captains calling on the Pakistan government to improve the treatment of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, becoming the only active captain to do so.

“Adding my support here to GC and the other former international captains. I hope the court ordered medical assessment be allowed to run its course, and that family visits continue. I hope Imran Khan is treated with the dignity anyone deserves,” Cummins wrote on X.

The post was in response to a tweet from podcast The Grade Cricketer, in which former Australia skipper Greg Chappell discussed Imran's health.

Imran, widely regarded as one of the finest all-rounders and captains in cricket history, has been in prison since 2023 facing 186 legal cases. His family have alleged restricted access to visits, medical care and legal counsel.

Chappell organised a letter signed by 14 former captains in February urging better treatment for Imran. A second letter, with 23 signatories, was released this week, demanding medical care in line with a Supreme Court order.

The letter said Imran was taken to hospital for examination by a board meant to include his personal physicians and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, but was returned to Adiala Jail within hours after being assessed instead by a state-appointed team and declared "medically fit".

Chappell told The Grade Cricketer that Imran, in isolation for three years, was struggling with vision in his right eye.

"I met up with him in Pakistan six years ago, and he was still a strong and robust older man. That's not the case anymore. His right eye… the sight in his right eye, apparently he is struggling with it," Chappell said.
