Bangladesh were bowled out for 346 in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, October 10, adding just 29 runs in the first hour to their overnight 317 for eight, having once stood comfortably at 221 for two.
Yamin Ahmadzai finished the job by dismissing Ebadot Hossain for a duck, a delivery on middle and leg stump taking the edge to point, where Zia Ur Rahman held a straightforward catch to end the innings in 92.3 overs.
Afghanistan had struck earlier through a successful review. Taijul Islam tried to pull Mohammad Salim outside leg stump, the ball brushed his glove and carried to Ikram Alikhil, and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s referral after a not out call ended a 30-run stand.
Taijul’s nine off 20 balls left Bangladesh 335 for nine after 90 overs, and Nayeem Hasan fought on alone, finishing unbeaten on 35 off 67 balls, a career best, up from his previous top score of 26 on debut in Chattogram in 2018.
Salim was the pick of Afghanistan’s bowlers with four for 82 from 23 overs, while Ahmadzai took three for 79, Ismat Alam two for 20 from 12.4 overs, and Qais Ahmad one for 60, with Zia Ur Rahman and Shahidi wicketless.
The slide had begun on day one, when Bangladesh lost six wickets for 96 runs after a dominant start. Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam and Litton Das all passed fifty without converting, while Mushfiqur Rahim fell for a duck.
Bangladesh began their bowling with a review blunder. In the first over, Shanto referred an appeal against Sediqullah Atal after Hasan Mahmud’s delivery struck the pad on its way to Litton Das, swayed by the slip fielders, but the umpire’s decision stood.
Within just 13 balls, the review system had tripped Shanto up twice. Atal edged the first ball of Hasan Mahmud’s new over through to Litton Das, yet Bangladesh did not review the strong appeal, and replays showed a clear deflection off the edge.
At the time of writing, Afghanistan were 14 without loss after five overs, still 332 runs behind, as Bangladesh’s bowlers searched for their first breakthrough,
