Bangladesh’s batting lineup crumbled in a blur of wickets, getting bowled out for 160 in 41.2 overs against Afghanistan in their second match of the ODI tri-series at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Wednesday.
Parvez Hossain Emon top-scored with 70 off 96 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes, but found little support as wickets fell around him.
Rashid Khan was the pick of the Afghanistan bowlers with 4-31 from 8.2 overs, removing Emon, Shoriful Islam, Alis Al Islam and Mustafizur Rahman.
Having lost the first ODI against Zimbabwe by 99 runs, Bangladesh now need to bowl out Afghanistan for 119 if they are to qualify for the final.
Batting first, Bangladesh were reduced to 6-2 inside three overs with Afghan pacer Yamin Ahmadzai striking twice, removing Tanzid Hasan (1) and Soumya Sarkar (0).
Azmatullah Omarzai then dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto (15) and captain Towhid Hridoy for a duck, the latter caught and bowled, to make it 28-4.
Saif Hassan and Emon steadied the innings with a 93-run fifth-wicket stand, taking Bangladesh to 121 before the partnership ended.
Saif made 41 off 82 balls before holding out to substitute fielder Nangeyalia Khan off Mohammad Nabi, the first of five wickets to fall for 39 runs.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz fell for 2, caught by the same substitute off Bilal Sami, before Shoriful Islam (7) was bowled by Rashid.
Emon was trapped lbw by Rashid at 156-8, ending Bangladesh’s last meaningful resistance, and Alis fell without scoring off 10 balls.
Mustafizur Rahman was bowled first ball by Rashid to close the innings, with Taskin Ahmed stranded on 2 not out.
Omarzai finished with 2-27 and Yamin 2-21, while Bilal took 1-23 and Nabi 1-35 from nine overs.
AM Ghazanfar was the most economical bowler, conceding just 12 runs from five overs, while Bangladesh also gifted 22 extras, including 11 wides.
