Nayeem Hasan became the quickest Bangladeshi spinner to 50 Test wickets in terms of balls bowled, reaching the landmark in 2,856 deliveries on Friday.
He got there by dismissing Shamar Joseph on day three of the Mirpur Test against West Indies.
Playing his 16th Test at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, the off-spinner overtook Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who had held the record after reaching 50 wickets in 13 Tests. Nayeem needed three more matches than Miraz, but fewer deliveries, the measure that decides this record.
Joseph moved across to swat a length ball outside off, only for it to spin away sharply and take an under-edge, which Litton Das held behind the stumps. Joseph, who had made four from 10 balls, became Nayeem’s 50th Test victim.
Warrican followed Joseph in the same over, trapped lbw before losing a review. After a Miraz maiden, last man Jayden Seales fell to the fifth ball of Nayeem’s next over, miscuing a slog sweep to mid-off, where Miraz held the catch.
Nayeem ended with four for 33 from 10.5 overs, bowling West Indies out for 245 and giving Bangladesh a 27-run first-innings lead. He had removed Justin Greaves lbw for 46 just before lunch, then took three more wickets after the break.
Nayeem had bowled only three overs on the second day, but was brought back on the third morning and made the breakthrough just before lunch, ending a half-century stand for the sixth wicket with captain Roston Chase.
Nayeem is now the eighth Bangladeshi bowler to reach 50 Test wickets. Among spinners, Taijul Islam leads with 275, followed by Shakib Al Hasan on 246 and Miraz on 231, while Mohammad Rafique also passed 50, and Nayeem now joins that group.
