Towhid Hridoy has become the fourth Bangladeshi batter to score a Test double century, reaching 200 against West Indies in the third session of the third day in Sylhet on Saturday. He resumed the day on 29 and turned his maiden Test hundred into a landmark only three others have reached.
He joins Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal on the list, which now holds six double centuries from four players. Mushfiqur’s 219 not out against Zimbabwe in 2018 remains the highest Test score by a Bangladeshi.
Hridoy reached the mark with a single to long-on off the first ball of the 100th over, pushing a slower, fuller delivery from Jomel Warrican. Taskin Ahmed was at the other end as Hridoy completed a Test double century in only his third match.
He closed in on the landmark against Shamar Joseph, crunching a no-ball full toss to deep backward square for four. A wide, full delivery then went to deep backward point for the single that took him to 199.
Hridoy had gone to tea on 190, ten short of the mark. A straight six off Warrican, who had shortened his length, was followed by a thick outside edge past the keeper for four on the last ball before the break.
The innings has already rewritten several records. It is the highest Test score at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium and the highest by a Bangladeshi against West Indies. His stand with Taijul Islam was also only Bangladesh’s third century partnership for the eighth wicket.
It is a striking turnaround for a batter with 54 runs in four innings before this match. He walked in at 22 for two on day two, and he stayed at the crease after a Jayden Seales delivery struck him flush on the ribs.
At the time of writing, Hridoy was unbeaten on 208 off 314 balls with 19 fours and eight sixes, the most sixes by a Bangladeshi in a Test innings.
He has gone past Tamim’s 206. Bangladesh were 340 for eight after 101 overs, 16 behind West Indies’ 356, with Taskin on two.
