Fixed VAT sees gold prices fall by Tk9,013 per bhori

Gold prices fell by Tk9,013 per bhori after the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS), for the first time, determined the prices inclusive of VAT under a new pricing system.

The price of 22-carat gold ornaments has been set at Tk232,930 per bhori (11.664 grams), reflective of the government’s FY2026-27 budget proposal of replacing the previous 5 percent VAT with a fixed one of Tk2,500 per bhori.

The change has been made effective from Thursday morning following a decision taken at a meeting of the BAJUS Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring.

Previously, on June 15, BAJUS had set the price of 22-carat gold at Tk230,422 per bhori.

After adding 5 percent VAT, the price of gold ornaments stood at Tk 241,943 per bhori.

Under the new system, the price of 21-carat gold ornaments has been set at Tk222,491 per bhori, reflecting a decrease of Tk8,491.

The price of 18-carat gold ornaments has been fixed at Tk191,056 per bhori, down by Tk 6,920, while the price of traditional-method gold ornaments has been set at Tk156,064 per bhori, a reduction of Tk5,170.

BAJUS said the new prices will remain effective at all jewellery shops until further notice.

With the inclusion of VAT in the prices, jewellers won’t be able to collect it separately.

The previous VAT system will remain in place for silver.

Gold prices in Bangladesh surged to an all-time high in January, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus) raising the price by Tk7,348 per bhori, citing an increase in the local market price of pure gold.

The price of gold was raised again last Saturday, following four consecutive drops.

In the global market, gold prices surged by 70 percent in 2025, reaching an all-time record high in January of this year.

Gold prices in the international spot market stood at $4,281.700 per ounce according to Bloomberg on Thursday.
