Egypt coach Hossam Hassan dedicated his team's dramatic World Cup penalty shootout win over Australia to the people of Palestine.

“I’m dedicating this victory to the Egyptian people and Palestinian people, those kind and honourable people,” Hassan told reporters after the match.

“May Allah grant them victory, may Allah have mercy on their martyrs,” he added, referring to Palestinians in Gaza.

Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in a tense round of 32 tie at Dallas Stadium on Friday.

It was the country's first-ever World Cup knockout victory, sending them into a last-16 meeting with Argentina.

Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning spot-kick after Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both missed for Australia from 12 yards.

Emam Ashour had given Egypt a 13th-minute lead with a header, before Mohamed Hany's own goal levelled things early in the second half.

After the shootout, Hassan carried both the Egyptian and Palestinian flags onto the pitch as his players knelt in prostration on the turf.

Hours before the match, a clip of an altercation involving the Egypt squad and the local law enforcement agency in Dallas went viral online.

Egypt's team said a police officer had pushed director Ibrahim Hassan and player Trezeguet as they tried to take a photo with a fan outside their hotel.

The Dallas Police Department said the matter had been resolved at the scene, without giving further detail on the circumstances.
