Bruno Guimaraes apologised to Brazil supporters after his first-half penalty miss proved costly in a 2-1 defeat to Norway, a result that sent the five-time champions crashing out in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The Newcastle United midfielder saw his spot-kick saved by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, with the missed opportunity becoming a decisive moment in Brazil's shock elimination.
“I think I was having a really good World Cup. I was unlucky with the penalty,” Bruno told Brazilian media Globo in the mixed zone after the match.
“I had studied their goalkeeper a lot and I could see that was the best corner to shoot from. Unfortunately, he saved it. But it's a general sadness, everyone is very upset," Bruno said.
The midfielder admitted the dressing room was devastated after a defeat Brazil had not anticipated, insisting the team believed it had enough quality to progress.
"We are very sad, clearly. It was a game we were fully capable of winning. I think it's a very strong pain and it's difficult to find words, because we weren't expecting this. We know that football often brings you a lot of joy," he lamented.
Bruno reserved his final words for Brazil's supporters, offering an emotional apology and thanking them for their backing throughout the tournament.
"Finally, I want to apologize to the fans, who always believed in us and supported us until the end. It's a very difficult day, even to find the words. I'm very upset about all this, and now we need to find strength in our families, which will be an important moment," the midfielder concluded.
