No foreign league players as Sourav Dewan earns surprise call up to ASEAN Cup preliminary squad

Bangladesh have named a 28 member preliminary squad for the FIFA ASEAN Cup without any of their foreign based players, as head coach Thomas Dooley began preparations for the team's first ever appearance at the tournament.

Hamza Chowdhury, Shamit Shome, Tariq Kazi, Cuba Mitchell, Zayyan Ahmed and Fahamedul Islam, all currently playing abroad, have been left out of the initial list. The group expected to join the squad once their club commitments allow, either before departure or after the team arrives in Indonesia.

The standout inclusion instead came in attack, where Sourav Dewan received his first ever call up to the national team.

The forward's performances for Mohammedan Sporting Club in the second phase of the recently concluded Bangladesh Football League were central to his selection.

Anisur Rahman Zico headlines the goalkeeping options, joined by Mitul Marma, Sujon Hossain and Mehedi Hasan Srabon.

The squad also features an experienced defensive unit including Topu Barman, Jamal Bhuyan and Shekh Morsalin among the midfield options.

Players have been asked to report to Dooley at The Westin Hotel in Gulshan by 11am on Thursday, August 27, when the national team's preparation camp officially gets under way.

The BFF has requested clubs release their players for national duty from August 27 through to October 7.

Bangladesh's participation in the tournament came about after India withdrew to prioritise friendlies against China and Brazil, opening the door for Bangladesh to step in as replacements.

Pakistan had already taken China's place in the competition earlier.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup, the first tournament of its kind for the region, runs in Jakarta from September 24 to October 4.

Bangladesh have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, while Group B features Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Pakistan.
