Bangladesh's women's football team suffered a second heavy defeat at the Asian Games, losing 6-0 to South Korea at Nagai Stadium in Osaka on Thursday, despite head coach Peter Butler making six changes and recalling several senior players.
Ritu Porna Chakma, Monika Chakma, Rupna Chakma, Sheuli AzIm and both Shamsunnahars returned to the starting eleven, a clear response to the opening 10-0 thrashing by North Korea, when several first choice players had been left out entirely.
South Korea, ranked 94 places above Bangladesh in the FIFA standings, controlled the match from the outset, eventually finishing with 75 percent possession and 20 shots, 13 of which were on target, converting six into goals.
Kim Min-ji broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, rising to head home from a corner despite goalkeeper Rupna Chakma's best efforts to keep the ball out amid a crowded penalty area.
Rupna produced several important saves to keep the scoreline respectable through the opening half, denying a follow up effort after a corner in the 33rd minute and punching away a long range strike from Choo Hye-joo two minutes later.
South Korea doubled their advantage on the counter attack just before the break, with Jeong Da-bin finishing clinically in the 42nd minute after Bangladesh's defenders failed to close down a through ball, sending the sides in at 2-0 at the interval.
Bangladesh showed signs of improvement after the restart, with Monika Chakma and Ritu Porna Chakma both looking to build attacks from deeper positions and create genuine goalscoring opportunities for the first time in the tournament.
Anika Siddiqui came closest to a breakthrough, first driving into the box from the right in the 56th minute before the goalkeeper denied her, then striking towards the top corner two minutes later after being played through by Shamsunnahar Junior, only to be saved again.
Those missed chances proved costly, as South Korea took full control in the closing stages. Choi Yu-ri made it 3-0 in the 65th minute, Ji So-yun added a fourth in the 77th, Yu-ri completed her brace two minutes later, and Ko Yu-jin rounded off the scoring in stoppage time to seal the 6-0 win.
The result leaves Bangladesh with 16 goals conceded and none scored across their opening two matches at the tournament.
Ritu Porna, Rupna and their teammates will now turn their attention to their final group fixture against Myanmar on September 21, a result that could still determine whether their campaign continues beyond the group stage.
