Bangladesh's FIFA ASEAN Cup opener ended in disappointment as they went down 3-0 to a rampant Malaysia side at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Friday.
Playing in the tournament for the first time, Bangladesh came into the contest as clear underdogs, sitting 181st in the world rankings against Malaysia's 136th. Coach Thomas Duli's men showed some second-half improvement but could never find a way past their more polished opponents.
Malaysia asserted themselves from the outset, testing goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon inside four minutes when a low effort from a corner needed a smart save. Their attacking intent continued to build, and Bangladesh's defence was stretched thin as wave after wave of pressure came forward.
The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute. Arif Aiman ghosted beyond defender Shakil Ahad Topu and slotted the ball through Srabon's legs to hand Malaysia a deserved lead, exposing gaps that had been building since kick-off.
Topu's afternoon worsened seven minutes before the break. A loose pass from the defender fell straight to Arif Aiman, who punished the error clinically to make it 2-0 and put the tie beyond reasonable doubt inside 38 minutes.
Bangladesh went in at the interval without registering a shot on target, though Srabon denied a third goal with a fine stop in first-half stoppage time. The scoreline flattered Malaysia only slightly, given their control throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Malaysia debutant Bergson Gustavo added gloss to the scoreline three minutes into the second half.
The Brazilian-born striker collected possession inside the box, shifted the ball onto his stronger foot and finished calmly to leave Bangladesh chasing a mountain.
Bangladesh's best opening fell to Hamza Choudhury in the 76th minute after he raced onto a pass with only the goalkeeper to beat. His initial effort was saved, and the follow-up attempt was also kept out before being scrambled behind for a corner.
Bangladesh substitute Shahriar Emon then dragged a tame left footed effort straight at the goalkeeper six minutes later.
At the other end, Malaysia nearly added a fourth when a fierce strike from their forward cannoned back off the crossbar in the closing stages.
Three players, Farhaan Ali Wahid, Shuki Itofusa and Zidane Yousuf, made their Bangladesh debuts in the fixture, though none could mark the occasion with a positive result as their side slipped to an eighth defeat in eleven meetings with Malaysia.
Bangladesh's solitary victory over their Group A rivals dates back to the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi, a 2-1 win.
Since then, results have been unkind, including a 4-1 defeat in 2022 Asian Cup qualifying and drawn friendlies in 2012 and 2015.
Bangladesh's next match in the ASEAN Cup is on September 28, against Singapore.
