Bangladesh suffer 9-2 mauling by Indonesia

Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh were thrashed 9-2 by hosts Indonesia at Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Wednesday, the fourth time in the team's history they have conceded nine goals in a match, after 9-0 defeats to South Korea in 1979 and Iran in 1982, and a 9-1 loss to Hong Kong in 1975.

Indonesia raced into an early lead through Mitchell Lee Baker, who turned in Ole Romeny's cutback inside 11 minutes, before Baker struck again nine minutes later, finishing off a scramble with a backheel after Bangladesh goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Shrabon could only parry an initial Romeny effort.

Rizky Ridho made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute with a diagonal strike from inside the box, before Bangladesh finally found the net four minutes later, Shahriar Emon heading home Shuki Itofusa's floated cross for the team's first goal of the tournament.

There was to be no respite, however. Baker completed his hat trick a minute later, then added a fourth with a well placed header from Justin Hubner's long pass in the 42nd minute, before two further goals sent Bangladesh into the break trailing 6-1.

Dooley's side showed more resolve after the restart, keeping Indonesia at bay for a long stretch before Luke Vickery, on as a substitute, scored in the 90th minute. Farhaan Ali Wahid pulled another back in first half added time, briefly threatening a respectable finish.

Indonesia had other ideas. Kevin Diks headed home in stoppage time before Baker completed his fifth goal of the night moments later, sealing a heavy defeat that nonetheless falls short of Bangladesh's worst results on goal difference alone.

The result also sits alongside other painful chapters in Bangladesh's history, including a 9-1 defeat to Hong Kong in 1975, an 8-0 loss to Japan in 1993, an 8-0 defeat to Syria in 2016, and a 7-0 reverse against Australia in 2023 World Cup qualifying.

Bangladesh and Indonesia have now met eight times, with the hosts winning five, including Tuesday's rout, while Bangladesh's solitary victory in the fixture dates back to 1985 World Cup qualifying.
