Four-star Madrid breeze past Leipzig

Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday to keep their 100% start, with Kylian Mbappe extending his scoring run and Yan Diomande punishing his old club.

Mbappe’s goal was his 12th in 12 games this season. Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva also scored before Diomande, a £120m summer signing from Leipzig, struck a spectacular volley.

Leipzig were the more dangerous side early on, but Thibaut Courtois kept them out. He made smart saves to deny Christopher Nkunku and Romulo.

Real grew into the game and led just before the break. Guler’s shot deflected off a defender and squirmed between Maarten Vandevoordt’s legs, and Silva forced it over the line for his first Madrid goal.

Vandevoordt tipped Federico Valverde’s stinging effort past the post after the restart. He was powerless moments later when Mbappe headed across goal and Guler tapped in.

Mbappe then scooped a Jude Bellingham cut-back into the side netting. He made up for it late on with a curling finish into the corner from the edge of the area.

Tidiam Gomis pulled a goal back for Leipzig after a neat move. Diomande restored Real’s three-goal cushion two minutes later.
