Independent lawmaker Rumin Farhana has asked the Attorney General to take departmental and legal action against Deputy Attorney General Nazrul Islam Choton over a Facebook post she described as defamatory and threatening.

Rumin, a Supreme Court lawyer and MP for Brahmanbaria-2, said Choton targeted her in a September 11 post from his personal Facebook account, referring to her as “Lady Mir Jafar” and making what she described as derogatory and provocative remarks.

In a letter to the Attorney General, Farhana said such conduct by a serving state law officer was unacceptable and undermined the professionalism of the Attorney General’s Office.

“Such threatening, indecent, distasteful and deliberately targeted conduct by a serving government law officer is not only insulting to me as a woman and an elected representative, but also seriously damages the image and professionalism of the Attorney General’s Office,” she said.

Rumin argued that the Attorney General’s Office was a state institution and should remain above partisan politics.

“The Attorney General’s Office represents Bangladesh, not any political party,” she said, adding that such use of social media by a deputy attorney general representing the state was incompatible with the standards expected of the legal profession.

She urged the Attorney General to treat the matter seriously and immediately initiate departmental proceedings and take any appropriate legal action against Choton.
