Ex-MP Faruk shown arrested in July Uprising attempted murder case

A court in Dhaka on Wednesday showed former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Naogaon-6 constituency, Md Omar Faruk, arrested in a case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station over the attempted murder of Sohel Rana during the July Mass Uprising in 2024.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam passed the order after police produced Faruk before the court and sought permission to show him arrested in the case.

The court later sent him back to jail.

According to the case documents, Sohel Rana was shot in front of Mayur Villa at Mohammadpur Tin Rastar Mor area on 5 August 2024. He was taken to hospital, where he underwent prolonged treatment.

On 11 June 2025, Sohel Rana filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station.

Police arrested Faruk from the Mohammadpur area of the capital on 8 October 2025.
